He headed the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awami_League" title="Awami League" class="mw-redirect">Awami League</a>, served as the first <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_Bangladesh" title="President of Bangladesh">President of Bangladesh</a> and later became its <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Bangladesh" title="Prime Minister of Bangladesh">Prime Minister</a>. He is popularly referred to as <b>Sheikh Mujib</b>, and with the honorary title of <b>Bangabandhu</b> (বঙ্গবন্ধু <i>Bôngobondhu</i>, "<i>Friend of Bengal</i>").
